Riding KRL in Indonesia, A Practical Guide for Chinese Tourists

Jakarta's traffic is a story foreign travelers often hear even before landing in the city. Fortunately, there is one mode of transport that cuts right through that problem while also being a cheap way to explore the greater Jakarta area, the KRL Commuter Line. For Chinese tourists visiting for the first time, understanding riding KRL in Indonesia before departure saves a lot of time and confusion once on the ground.

KRL is an electric train system connecting Jakarta with surrounding cities such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. Unlike the MTR in Hong Kong or subways in major Chinese cities, KRL runs above ground for most of its routes, so passengers get to take in the city scenery while getting around.

Riding KRL in Indonesia From Scratch

The first thing to prepare is a card for tapping in and out of stations, since the KRL system is entirely cashless. There are two main options, the Kartu Multi Trip or KMT, sold officially by KAI Commuter at station counters for around IDR 30,000 including starting balance, or using a bank issued e-money card such as Flazz BCA, Brizzi BRI, or TapCash BNI, which foreign visitors may find easier to pick up at a convenience store. These cards can be topped up at station counters or nearby minimarkets.

Once a card is in hand, the next step for riding KRL in Indonesia is fairly simple, tap the card at the entry gate, find the correct platform through the information board or the KRL Access app, then tap again at the exit gate of the destination station. Fares are calculated automatically based on distance, starting from IDR 3,000 for the first 25 kilometers with an additional IDR 1,000 for every next 10 kilometers, with a maximum fare of around IDR 8,000 to IDR 10,000 for the longest routes such as Jakarta Kota to Bogor or Tangerang.

For those who prefer going card free through a phone app, another option is available through the transit feature on the Gojek app, allowing tickets to be purchased directly from a phone without queuing at the counter. This tends to help travelers who have just arrived and have not yet gotten a physical card.

Favorite Routes Worth Trying

The Jakarta Kota to Bogor route ranks among the most popular among tourists, ending near the sprawling Bogor Botanical Garden, ideal for a relaxed stroll away from Jakarta's heat. The trip takes around an hour from downtown, considerably faster and cheaper than a taxi stuck on a toll road prone to jams.

For exploring old Jakarta, getting off at Jakarta Kota Station opens up walking access to the Kota Tua district, filled with Dutch colonial architecture, history museums, and cafes that often show up as photo backdrops. This station also connects to Sunda Kelapa Harbor, home to traditional wooden cargo ships, appealing for anyone interested in Indonesia's maritime trade history.

Before scheduling riding KRL in Indonesia as part of the itinerary, make sure immigration documents are sorted first. Chinese tourists can use the Visa on Arrival for a short visit, or apply through Visaloka when planning to explore more than one city on a longer trip. With the visa already settled, the rest of the time can go entirely toward enjoying the ride and exploring corners of Jakarta most tourists rarely see.
